Catch of the Day: An Overturned Box Truck

Catch of the Day: An Overturned Box Truck

A box truck flipped over and landed itself in a creek. When it came off the road, the front end became wedged against a large bush, contorting the box and damaging the connection between the box and the truck itself. This truck accident recovery required a full crane lift to fish it out of the creek. Watch the video to see how we lifted the box and truck with our new crane. It did feel a lot like fishing, and we caught ourselves a big one.

The Main Causes of Truck Overturns

The leading cause of a semi-truck overturn is a centrifugal force. If a truck is traveling along a curved road, that force will cause it to lean away from the direction of the curve. If it leans too much, it can roll over and require truck accident recovery services.

Box trucks like this one are more vulnerable because the trailer has a high center of gravity. How the box is loaded can make a huge difference in stability and safety. If the load isn’t balanced correctly, it is more likely to flip over on the road.

Tips for Preventing a Shifting Load

When loading a box truck, the loaders must be aware of how heavy the load is, and the overall weight distribution of the load in the box or trailer. Stacking loads higher near the cab is a common mistake. Uneven stacking could put too much weight on the front axle. The front axle typically has about half the gross axle weight rating of the rear axle.

Try to keep the load flat and even, and then make sure it is adequately secured. Pallets can shift easily on the road if they’re not strapped down, shrink-wrapped and centered. Always consider how every pallet and box will be contained while the truck is in motion. If the load shifts on the road and the truck is taking a curve, that truck and driver could require truck accident recovery. Contribute to the safety of the driver and everyone else on the road with careful, proper loading before the truck even pulls out of the lot.

90lbs of Wood Debris Spills in a Semi-Truck Accident in Kirkland, WA

Our Pro-Enviro division responds to the scene when there is diesel fuel, oil or other vehicle fluids spilled after a semi-truck accident. They weren’t needed in this case. This semi-truck end dump truck lost over 90lbs of wood debris, which thankfully, is completely biodegradable.

The end dump truck flipped onto its side during rush hour traffic on Interstate 405, north of Bellevue in Kirkland, WA. They required a prompt semi-truck tow service to get the truck back on its wheels and moved, so traffic could start flowing again. Our team provided this service, developing a recovery plan upon arriving at the semi-truck accident and executing it safely and effectively.

What is an End Dump Truck?

Almost all dump trucks use a hydraulic system to lift the bed used to transport material, but these systems come in various configurations. The most common dump truck will have an open-boxed bed that is in the rear of the truck. This box is lifted by hydraulic rams at the front, thus dumping the material out of the back of it.

An end dump truck also called a semi-trailer end dump truck, has the hydraulic dump system on a trailer that is pulled by the tractor. The dumping system is not attached to the truck itself. In the US, most end dump trucks have a 2-axle trailer with dual tires that is pulled by a 3-axle semi-tractor. The beds on these trailer end dumps are massive. They are used when more debris or material needs to be moved than a regular dump truck could carry.

The disadvantage? They’re unstable when raised in the dumping position. If the ground isn’t level, you typically couldn’t or shouldn’t use a semi-trailer end dump truck for the job. It could result in a semi-truck accident. Because this type of truck is larger and its operating parts more complex, they require a specialized semi-truck tow service to get them upright again if flipped. As always, Pro-Tow was up to the challenge.

Upsy Daisy on I-90 in Issaquah, WA

Upsy Daisy on I-90 in Issaquah, WA

#teamprotow called on to perform an overhead lift for a semi-trailer heavily loaded with gravel that had become dislodged and jammed in the frame of the 2013 Peterbilt 378. #WSDOT Incident Response responded immediately to assist with lane closure and for quick clearance of the busy Issaquah section of I-90. After dislodging the semi-trailer from the Peterbilt, a replacement Freightliner was able to be successfully connected and the roadway fully opened.

Semi Truck Wreck

Semi Truck Wreck

#teamprotow called on to clear a semi-truck accident in Auburn, WA after it overturns during the afternoon commute snarling traffic. The truck was carrying a full load of steel and weighed more than 70,000lbs, and complicating the recovery was diesel and other motor vehicle fluids that needed to be quickly cleaned to prevent runoff to the nearby storm water collection sites. WSDOT, WSP, and Valley Regional Fire were on scene to assist with coordination in what WSDOT termed a Major Incident Tow and activating an enhanced quick clearance protocol. Fortunately, nobody was seriously hurt and the recovery was quickly cleared and the motor vehicle fluid spill was cleaned preventing other mitigation requirements.

Paper Roll Cargo Recovery

Paper Roll Cargo Recovery

#teamprotow called on to open I-90 after a semi-truck loses its fully loaded trailer nearly tumbling town the embankment. Saved by the jersey barrier, and a stroke of luck the load of paper rolls overturned but everyone was safe. The tractor towing the trailer lost the 5th wheel hitch it uses to connect to the trailer and they became separated. #teamprotow was called on to safely and quickly open all lanes with minimal closure time during an evening traffic period. Utilizing a heavy duty rotating crane style wrecker and a heavy duty wrecker #teamprotow was able to prevent any further loss of load.

Go Army, Tire Change with a Rotator

Go Army, Tire Change with a Rotator

#WashingtonStatePatrol #GoAarmy and #WSDOT calls on PRO-TOW to help with a tire chain for the Army Convoy on I-405 on Monday March 25, 2019 during rush hour traffic.  After the convoy suffered a flat tire, the team quickly went to work to replace the tire.  Unfortunately, due to its size the convoy was blocking lane 1 on NB I-405 in a busy area and a busy time of the day.  After suffering a failure with the team’s jack lifting the 40,000 pound vehicle, the command called on Pro-Tow with their 50 Ton Rotator crane style heavy duty wrecker.  The crane style wrecker was able to make quick and safe work with the overhead lift rotating over the hood.  Not blocking the highway, minimal lane closure, and huge lifting capacity got the team back in the convoy and traffic flowing normally in #RentonWa.   #Millerindustries #teamprotow #xtrema #phillystran #crosbyindustries
