Accident Recovery: 167 Wine Bottles on the Road

Accident Recovery: 167 Wine Bottles on the Road

In this incident, on February 2nd, 2021, we received a special request for an overturned semi-truck and trailer carrying 167 wine bottles. The overturn had happened on the ramp from 212th to NB167, which was a heavily trafficked area. We responded on route with a heavy-duty rotating crane-style wrecker, heavy-duty recovery wrecker, equipment support vehicle, and necessary additional labor.

Accident Recovery

We responded to the incident command post and waited for the Washington State Police to close the ramp. As we waited, our Team Pro-Tow did a scene evaluation, put together a recovery plan, and did some recovery calculations. The quickest and safest method, and least chance of more spillage, was to use specialty air cushions and landing bags. Our team skillfully installed the cushions and landing bags, followed by the rotator rigging and recovery wrecker rigging to upright the combination. Working carefully and without rushing, we began the recovery work. We completed the task successfully and moved the unit to a nearby safe location. Our Pro-Enviro team began the spill recovery and debris cleanup work from the spilled bottles during that time.

Continued Recovery

The load inside had shifted considerably to the driver side, which meant we needed a heavy-duty class S tractor to transport the trailer safely. Our trusty team began the task of separating the trailer, then used the rotator to lift the nose of the trailer and allow the Class S tractor access. The hookup went without a hitch, and we transported it to our secured storage yard with an escort from the Department of Transportation. Meanwhile, Pro-Enviro continued the spill recovery and debris cleanup. We located the appropriate secured storage locations at the yard, installed environmental spill containment pods, and parked the tractor. Finally, we reconditioned all vehicles and equipment, completed the paper, and gave the cleared call.

A messy accident recovery well-handled!

The Grinder: Logging Road Truck Accident Recovery

The Grinder: Logging Road Truck Accident Recovery

On June 19th, 2020, We received an emergency dispatch about an overturned Kenworth T800, Loadking Lowboy, and a Vermeer stump grinder. The load had overturned while on a logging road when the trailer didn’t make the turn. We requested and received photos of the accident to review and form a plan for this complicated crane services job.

We put together the required equipment for the job. Equipment included a heavy-duty rotating crane style wrecker, a heavy-duty recovery wrecker, a heavy incident special equipment, and a support truck. We called in trained and certified recovery operators and headed out to the job.

Multistep Truck Accident Recovery

The scene had limited road access, making things difficult. We needed a heavy truck accident recovery unit and a trained and certified operator to help. We also found leaking motor vehicle oils and fluids, but the customer said they would mediate the cleanup over the following days.

With narrow space available on the road, equipment placement needed to be precisely placed. After first disconnecting the grinder from the trailer, we began the truck accident recovery. We used all three recovery units for the truck and trailer’s successful and safe righting (now with even less road space to use). Still, our skilled team even managed to avoid any extra damage. The unit was then hooked up and moved to a nearby safe location. Once there, the customer towed it away.

Grinder Recovery

The final part of this truck accident recovery was the grinder. It was down vertically and 15 feet approximately from the narrow road. On top of that, it had become embedded in the dirt embankment and then pinned by existing stumps. Setting up the rotator for crane services took extra time. It had to be safe, given the road’s slope and narrowness. While our team was able to right the grinder, it stayed stuck in the embankment and stumps. As it began to get dark, it also started to rain.

The equipment was moved and repositioned for a new angle, and the recovery attempted again and again. Our team even tried attaching the equipment to an old-growth stump, but that didn’t work. Finally, the customer got the grinder running, which let our team perform a difficult but still safe crane service recovery. Throughout these many hours of hard work, safety breaks were enforced and repeatedly taken for our team. That way, injury, fatigue, and possible mistakes were all avoided.

Final Recovery

With the grinder recovery successful, our team began taking down and temporarily storing the multiple equipment sets. As a team, we handled the cleanup, storage, and loading and only left together. Reconditioning and returning the equipment to its original condition took several days. Still, we completed the paperwork and got the cleared call.

Even complex jobs like this truck accident recovery and crane services are not too much for our skilled Pro-Tow team!

Dominion in the Median: Heavy Truck Tow

Dominion in the Median: Heavy Truck Tow

On November 11th, 2020, Team Pro-Tow responded to a call for a tractor-and-trailer that had gotten stuck in the median. They needed a heavy truck tow. Since no one could tell us whether the tractor or two trailers were still upright, we called Washington State Patrol (WSP) and updated them on the situation.

We got recovery vehicles from the yard before heading out to the scene for this truck accident response.

Assessment and Planning

Once Team Pro-Tow arrived, we contacted both the driver for signatures and a WSP trooper. The trooper told us that the customer was in charge, so we began formulating a recovery plan. 10 to 15 gallons of fluid had also spilled onto the roadway. Because of traffic control and safety concerns, spill cleanup had to wait. First, we had to focus on the truck accident response and get that truck out of the way.

Truck Accident Response

Our team set up a mobile rotating crane for recovery and rigged the vehicle. Once done, we supplied air to the tractor and revealed a significant air leak behind a crushed part of the frame and support brace. We couldn’t repair the air leak, so we caged the brakes and supplied air to the trailer instead. We moved the unit back to the roadway, where we then hooked the tractor and trailers together. WSP recommended the nearest safest location to move the rig.

Once there, we completed the heavy truck tow separated the tractor and trailers. Upon request, we towed the trailers to the Old Dominion yard. The tractor stayed hooked up and was towed to the Freightliner body shop, also as requested. We left the tractor at the bay. Then our team returned to the yard and got the equipment ready for the next job.

Next-Day Clean Up

The next day, we contacted the Department of Transportation and Traffic Control Company to handle the roadway cleanup. Team Pro-Enviro brought a compact tracked loader with a bucket to clean up as per the Department of Ecology standards. We disposed of all contaminated soil, and samples were taken and dropped off.

A heavy truck tow and accident recovery successfully and safely handled!

Truck Accident Recovery on Tiger Mountain Summit

Truck Accident Recovery on Tiger Mountain Summit

In this incident on October 22, 2019, Team Pro-Tow responded to an emergency dispatch from the Washington State Police about a tractor-trailer that had overturned on the I-90 at Tiger Mountain Summit. The trailer was loaded with laundry and had gone 20 feet off the roadway.

We dispatched a heavy-duty rotating crane style wrecker and a heavy-duty recovery truck. At least one lane of WB was able to be left open, because of the location of the crash. To safely handle this truck accident recovery, we brought in another heavy-duty crane style wrecker. Leaking fuel oil and motor oils were spreading across the roadway, so we dispatched our spill response equipment and a team to safely handle the fuel spill cleanup.

Pro-Tow reported to the incident command post and after reviewing the situation, we created a recovery plan. This job required difficult additional rigging, equipment and careful operation because of the location of the truck. First, we installed rigging and performed a test lift to make sure all emergency personnel would be safe. Specialized high-pressure air bags were used to lift the trailer, and wide recovery straps were added for support to prevent any rupturing.

We were able to not only safely and successfully upright the truck, but we were able to do so with minimal lane closure and in little time. With the truck accident recovery successful, the truck was then moved to a nearby parking lot.

Moving Onto Cleanup Duty

Next was handling the excessive amounts of casualty debris on the roads. The debris was collected and contained, and the roadway swept and cleaned. The embankment also needed reshaping, which we did to the maximum practical extent. Emergency fuel spill cleanup response protocols were implemented to handle the fuel and motor oil spills and a compact trailer used to remove the contaminated soil.

In the end, the tractor and trailer were safely transported to the storage yard, and all equipment was returned to its original location. A job well done and safely handled by our Pro-Tow team!

Smoked in Issaquah: Heavy-Duty Tow Needed for Burnt Out Tractor and Trailer

Smoked in Issaquah: Heavy-Duty Tow Needed for Burnt Out Tractor and Trailer

On March 7, 2020, Team Pro-tow received an emergency dispatch regarding a fully burned-out semi-tractor and trailer that was blocking the I-90 near Issaquah, WA. The Washington State Police requested a heavy-duty tow truck to the scene, as well as a cleanup crew to clean up the truck accident and get the roadway back open.

Team Pro-Tow Quickly Responds

Without delay, we were able to mobilize a team of professional semi-truck accident recovery personnel, and the heavy-duty tow equipment required to handle this unusual and challenging incident. Both Pro-Tow and Pro-Enviro were on the scene, bring our specialized equipment, and certified and trained operators in no time. We were ready to get to work on this recovery.

Hookup, Tow, and Cleanup

After surveying the scene of the fire and truck accident, Team Pro-Tow was able to safely hook up the semi-tractor and trailer to our towing equipment and remove it from the roadway. Once the tractor and trailer were out of the way, we employed our truck accident recovery and cleanup crew. To do this, we used a Bobcat compact track loader, industrial-grade grapple, and a specialized street sweeper.

All the debris, ashes, truck parts, and contaminates were cleaned up and secured in a dump trailer for safe disposal. Our tireless teams worked through the night to restore I-90 to a safe condition, so all regular travel on the roadway could continue.

Once the cleanup and truck accident recovery was complete, all Pro-Tow and Pro-Enviro teammates returned the tractor and trailer to our secured storage yard in Auburn, WA. Here, we continued unloading the debris, prepared the manifest, and completed an extensive cleanup of all equipment.

Almost Made it, Almost Didn’t: Heavy-Duty Towing Required

Almost Made it, Almost Didn’t: Heavy-Duty Towing Required

Earlier last month, the SR18 was closed. When a highway closes, semi-trucks will take alternative routes to get where they’re going. In some cases, the driver might not be as familiar with the new route. An unfamiliar road and tight turn was the problem in this semi-truck accident recovery incident.

A semi-truck and trailer loaded with paper rolls were on a new route, and the corner was a little tighter than the driver anticipated. He didn’t quite make the turn, and it nearly caused the truck and trailer to flip. This recovery was a job for Pro-Tow and our heavy-duty towing crew.

The truck was about 80,000 pounds, which meant we had to use our heavy-duty crane style wrecker to undo this mistake. After we carefully set it up and rigged the trailer properly, we were able to relocate the loaded container to a better position and location. Then the driver was able to continue his travels and make his delivery of paper rolls.

Semi-Trucks Need To Make Slow Wide Turns

Cornering a semi-truck and a loaded trailer is something any driver will have to do, whether in the city or coming on and off roadway ramps. Unfortunately, even a small miscalculation, when cornering, can cause a big problem. If you have too much momentum and not enough area to turn in, your load will start to push the rig into the turn. In bad cases, this can cause the trailer to want to flip.

The key to safely turning semi-trucks is to take the turn slowly. That’s why you’ll notice most big rigs taking their turns at a near crawl. If they slow down too late, it can cause the momentum to shift cargo, and then accidents happen. Trucks also need plenty of space when turning. Truck drivers need to pay close attention to surrounding traffic, but for those of us in regular vehicles, we need to make sure we are giving them the space they need to turn safely. Remember, both loads and lives might depend on it.

Pro-Tow offers heavy-duty towing services and semi-truck accident recovery. Count on us 24 hours a day.
