Dominion in the Median: Heavy Truck Tow

Dominion in the Median: Heavy Truck Tow

On November 11th, 2020, Team Pro-Tow responded to a call for a tractor-and-trailer that had gotten stuck in the median. They needed a heavy truck tow. Since no one could tell us whether the tractor or two trailers were still upright, we called Washington State Patrol (WSP) and updated them on the situation.

We got recovery vehicles from the yard before heading out to the scene for this truck accident response.

Assessment and Planning

Once Team Pro-Tow arrived, we contacted both the driver for signatures and a WSP trooper. The trooper told us that the customer was in charge, so we began formulating a recovery plan. 10 to 15 gallons of fluid had also spilled onto the roadway. Because of traffic control and safety concerns, spill cleanup had to wait. First, we had to focus on the truck accident response and get that truck out of the way.

Truck Accident Response

Our team set up a mobile rotating crane for recovery and rigged the vehicle. Once done, we supplied air to the tractor and revealed a significant air leak behind a crushed part of the frame and support brace. We couldn’t repair the air leak, so we caged the brakes and supplied air to the trailer instead. We moved the unit back to the roadway, where we then hooked the tractor and trailers together. WSP recommended the nearest safest location to move the rig.

Once there, we completed the heavy truck tow separated the tractor and trailers. Upon request, we towed the trailers to the Old Dominion yard. The tractor stayed hooked up and was towed to the Freightliner body shop, also as requested. We left the tractor at the bay. Then our team returned to the yard and got the equipment ready for the next job.

Next-Day Clean Up

The next day, we contacted the Department of Transportation and Traffic Control Company to handle the roadway cleanup. Team Pro-Enviro brought a compact tracked loader with a bucket to clean up as per the Department of Ecology standards. We disposed of all contaminated soil, and samples were taken and dropped off.

A heavy truck tow and accident recovery successfully and safely handled!

Second Canmandment: Truck Accident Recovery on SR18

Second Canmandment: Truck Accident Recovery on SR18

In this incident, on October 28th, 2020, A tractor-trailer had overturned on the onramp to WB SR18 and needed two heavy-duty recovery wreckers to help with this emergency incident response. We sent the requested equipment to the scene and then reported to the incident command post for further scene evaluation. We found that motor vehicle fluid was leaking onto the roadway and under the container. Once we got authorization from the driver’s agent, we began our truck accident recovery work.

Pro-Enviro also came to the scene with special equipment to handle the spill, including a flatbed tow truck, dump trailer, and compact track loader with specialized attachments. After some calculations, we needed even more specialized equipment. We called for a heavy-duty Landoll and another heavy-duty recovery wrecker to handle this recovery.

Truck Accident Recovery Process Begins

With the necessary equipment all ready, our team first disconnected the frame from the overturned container. Instead of righting the container, we decided to transport it on its side on the Landoll trailer. We carefully calculated the container’s condition, location, weight, and unknown cargo to make sure we could do the truck accident recovery safely.

Once the container was detached, we successfully righted the tractor and set it up for transport to a safe location while the emergency incident response work continued. Using a heavy-duty rotating crane style wrecker, we performed an overhead crane lift. We then prepared to load the container onto the Landoll. For added safety we installed specialty rigging to help with the limit for safe working loads.

We successfully lifted the container but a new problem arose as the refrigerator fuel tank began to steam. We immediately deployed our recovery personnel to begin safe control measures to contain the new leak. Once it was safely contained, our team finished loading the suspended container and safely secured it, finalizing our emergency incident response. While our team moved the container and tractor to our secure storage yard, Pro-Enviro continued the roadway’s extensive cleanup work.

Measures to Save The Cargo

Even at the storage yard, there was more work to do to complete the job. During the set-up for a safe unload and righting of the container, it began to bulge on one side and make noises immediately deemed unsafe. To prevent the risk of bursting, we left the container until morning when our team could have better light to revaluate the final steps of the truck accident recovery.

Crawford and Co., the insurance company, requested extraordinary measures to save the cargo inside the container. With authorization, we did a temperature test and visual inspection. We found the cargo was still frozen, so there was still a chance to save it. Our skilled team safely lifted the container without further damage. The customer supplied the necessary chassis with a power unit to power the refrigerated unit once again. A service tech handled the installation for us and continued to do service calls to ensure everything remained frozen.

Despite being a much more involved job, our team handled it safely and thoroughly. A successful truck accident recovery complete, with the cargo saved too!

Lodged Truck and Trailer Need Heavy Duty Towing in Sumner, WA

Lodged Truck and Trailer Need Heavy Duty Towing in Sumner, WA

In this incident, on September 6th, 2020, Pro-Tow responded to an emergency dispatch for a truck and trailer overturned into a ditch in Sumner, WA. The fully loaded truck was leaking oil and diesel fuel and was blocking the roadway. We had to get there with Pro-Enviro Motor Vehicle Spill Response as soon as possible.

We sent in our HD rotating crane style wrecker and heavy-duty recovery wrecker for the job. Once on-site, we talked with the incident command post to assess the situation. Two immediate risks were a running, fish-bearing stream on the other side of the roadway and a storm drain within 100 feet. Contaminations of either of these would be hazardous, so we moved quickly on this truck accident recovery.

An assessment of the trailer found diesel fuel, coolant, and hydraulic oil dribbling from the tank. The spill recovery required was extensive.

The trailer itself was also carrying various cargo, including what appeared to be 31 tons of salt like substance. The heavily damaged trailer had become stuck in the embankment, alongside trees and the ditch. We called for additional equipment, including a compact track loader, flatbed tow truck, major incident special equipment support vehicle, and extra hands.

Truck Accident Recovery

Our Pro-Tow team worked with the Sumner Police Department and City of Sumner Public Works to authorize our recovery plan. Once given the authorization, we began our work.

Using rigging, we dislodged the trailer’s rear from the muddy embankment and then emptied the trailer load. The emptying process continued with the help of our rotator. Then, using recovery wreckers, we began the safe process of rightening the truck. This process was extra complicated as the roadway barely had a shoulder and a very narrow hairpin turn. The road began to fail during the process, so we installed additional ground bearing to increase the truck accident recovery process’s safety. This action helped to further damage to the roadway.

With our attention to safety, the truck was successfully rightened and ready to prepare for heavy-duty towing to the storage yard. All necessary equipment was reconditioned and returned to the original locations, prepared for the next call.

Team Pro-Enviro then handled spill recovery cleaning for the roadway of the spilled fuel, oil, and cargo products. They also tackled the extensive cleanup of the ditch spill, which had leaked during the truck recovery.

All Nighter

Our qualified professionals continued to work tirelessly, continuing the work with a 4-hour calling process to coordinate with various people and companies. It turns out the salt-like substance that spilled from the trailer was livestock feed. We got a good-faith estimate from the truck owner and found a local dairy farmer willing to take a substantial amount of the animal feed for their lucky cows. We then obtained the necessary soil samples for testing and continued to work through the next morning until we finished the cleanup. Our team finalized all the required paperwork, reconditioned any final equipment, and got the all-clear call.

Team Pro-Tow and Team Pro-Enviro complete another heavy-duty towing and spill recovery job successfully!

Split Trailer Blocking the I-405 in Renton Needed Accident Recovery

Split Trailer Blocking the I-405 in Renton Needed Accident Recovery

On August 31st, 2020, Team Pro-Tow received a dispatch requesting a heavy-duty tow truck to assist with a semi and a fully loaded trailer that was stuck and blocking the highway. The trailer had melted in the middle and collapsed on the I-405 near Renton, WA.

Our team arrived to perform accident recovery, pushing through heavy traffic. We reported to the incident command on-site, including the Washington Department of Transportation, Washington State Police, and the driver of the truck-in-trouble. After some planning, we got authorization to start with heavy-duty tow and load recovery services.

Load Recovery

Both Team Pro-Tow and our Pro-Enviro division worked to unload the broken trailer. We lifted the load, piece by piece, and loaded it carefully on our flatbed trailer. We used our heavy-duty tow truck with a rotating crane-style wrecker to lift the pallets loaded with cargo out of the trailer. Once they were out of the trailer and on the road, the bobcat forklift moved them onto the flatbed. With the shipment secured on our flatbed, it was ready to move out of the way to a safe location.

Trailer Accident Recovery

Now it was the trailer’s turn. We performed an overhead crane lift using specialized equipment at the crack of the trailer. We got it lifted safely and loaded on a flatbed trailer. We had to lift and move the trailer in two separate pieces. Then both Team Pro-Tow and Team Pro-Enviro got to work cleaning up debris so we could open things back up for the rush hour traffic on the I-405.

Load Recovery Continued

Once we used a heavy-duty tow truck and trailer to get the broken trailer’s cargo in our yard, it was time to unload. We neatly stored the loaded pallets in our secure property so the customer could come to retrieve it when they could and get it reloaded to complete their delivery. We signed off the paperwork and performed a manifest of the debris.

Another successful accident recovery and load recovery for Team Pro-Tow!

Holy Smoked – Burnt Out Truck Accident Recovery

Holy Smoked – Burnt Out Truck Accident Recovery

This summer and fall, Washington State was in crisis mode due to wildfires. In this incident on September 10, 2020, during this wildfire crisis, a battery cable shorted out in this truck while the driver was asleep in the sleeper berth. It started a fire, destroying the tractor. Fortunately, the driver was able to evacuate and get to safety in time.

Team Pro-Tow and Team Pro-Enviro were called to the scene to assist with the truck accident recovery and spill recovery. The tractor was destroyed and was lifted onto a flatbed trailer for transport. The trailer, though it suffered notable damage, was in good enough shape to be towed away.

Once the tractor and trailer were out of the way, we got to work on the spill recovery. With the help of industry partners, we got to work clearing debris and cleaning the contaminated area. After a long day on the job, we completed the truck accident recovery. The scene was cleaned up and looking like it never happened.

What Causes Vehicle Fires?

A failure in a vehicle’s electrical system is one of the leading causes of vehicle fires. Battery cables carry enough current to ignite anything combustible. If the cables have frayed or are losing insulation, it can cause a short circuit. A charging battery will produce hydrogen gas, and this is combustible. Combine the two, and you’ll likely have a fire.

There are things in the vehicle’s electrical system to help prevent arcing and short-circuiting. Fuses and circuit breakers add safety to the system, but all components can break down over time. Poor installation or repair jobs and not regularly inspecting the system can render these safeguards useless in extreme cases.

While proper maintenance of your fleet vehicles can help prevent most vehicle fires, accidents still can happen. In this case, it was fortunate the driver woke up in time to escape safely from the vehicle.

Truck Accident Recovery on Tiger Mountain Summit

Truck Accident Recovery on Tiger Mountain Summit

In this incident on October 22, 2019, Team Pro-Tow responded to an emergency dispatch from the Washington State Police about a tractor-trailer that had overturned on the I-90 at Tiger Mountain Summit. The trailer was loaded with laundry and had gone 20 feet off the roadway.

We dispatched a heavy-duty rotating crane style wrecker and a heavy-duty recovery truck. At least one lane of WB was able to be left open, because of the location of the crash. To safely handle this truck accident recovery, we brought in another heavy-duty crane style wrecker. Leaking fuel oil and motor oils were spreading across the roadway, so we dispatched our spill response equipment and a team to safely handle the fuel spill cleanup.

Pro-Tow reported to the incident command post and after reviewing the situation, we created a recovery plan. This job required difficult additional rigging, equipment and careful operation because of the location of the truck. First, we installed rigging and performed a test lift to make sure all emergency personnel would be safe. Specialized high-pressure air bags were used to lift the trailer, and wide recovery straps were added for support to prevent any rupturing.

We were able to not only safely and successfully upright the truck, but we were able to do so with minimal lane closure and in little time. With the truck accident recovery successful, the truck was then moved to a nearby parking lot.

Moving Onto Cleanup Duty

Next was handling the excessive amounts of casualty debris on the roads. The debris was collected and contained, and the roadway swept and cleaned. The embankment also needed reshaping, which we did to the maximum practical extent. Emergency fuel spill cleanup response protocols were implemented to handle the fuel and motor oil spills and a compact trailer used to remove the contaminated soil.

In the end, the tractor and trailer were safely transported to the storage yard, and all equipment was returned to its original location. A job well done and safely handled by our Pro-Tow team!
