Revisited Crane Lift Recovery: Pro-Tow Fishes for Box Trucks

Revisited Crane Lift Recovery: Pro-Tow Fishes for Box Trucks

In August 2019, we published a heavy-duty truck recovery report for a box truck recovery requiring an expert recovery plan and crane lift service. Pro-Tow needed to perform a full crane lift to pull a box truck out of this mess.

The box truck had flipped over before landing down the watery ditch. And, once it was off-road, the front of the truck got stuck inside a large bush. This caused damage to the box and the connection between the box and the truck. Pro-Tow came in with our crane to lift the box truck back to the road fully.

Prevent Shifting Loads

How you load your truck – especially a box truck with a high center of gravity — can mean the difference between a safe and stable truck on the road and one that is not. If loads are not properly balanced, there is a higher risk that a truck will flip over when on the road. Then you’ll need heavy-duty truck recovery.

For drivers, a few tips can help you prevent a shifting load. Before driving away, performing a detailed inspection of your cargo is crucial. First, make sure to check the weight of the cargo against the weight limits specified by your truck’s manufacturer. Next, you want to ensure that your cargo is evenly distributed and well-secured. Another tip is to inspect your straps and other tying materials. You want to ensure that they are all in good condition and will not loosen or break during transport.

Pro-Tow Load Shift Services

Crane Lift Recovery

If an accident happens due to a shifting load or something else, Pro-Tow’s trained operators are on hand. Revisited: Fully Loaded End Dump Truck Recovery

Revisited: Fully Loaded End Dump Truck Recovery

In this incident on December 5th, 2016, an end dump truck weighing nearly 90,000 pounds and carrying wood debris rolled over on Interstate 405 North of Bellevue. Team Pro-Tow came to help with this dump truck recovery.

We arrived at the scene and immediately set up pylons around the accident to keep traffic and our team safe. We then assessed the situation and brought in our two heavy-duty trucks for the dump truck recovery. We placed straps around the vehicle and the axles and carefully began pulling upright again.

Once the truck’s body was up, we carefully straightened the dump truck’s end until it was positioned correctly again. Then we could haul it away, providing a quality service for heavy towing in Kirkland.

What is an End Dump Truck?

An end dump truck, such as the one involved in this accident, is a specific type of dumping trailer. It unloads by lifting its dump box, the large carrier it carries, and dumping from the rear of that box. You can identify an end dump with higher sides than its main body, which gives them a great capacity to handle larger loads or rough materials. In this case, the end dump truck was hauling wood debris.

How Much Can a Loaded Dump Truck Weigh?

The weight of a dump truck depends on what it is carrying and the dump truck itself. An aluminum end dump truck can carry anywhere from 23 to 28 tons but can also carry up to 30 tons.

Just as with any vehicle carrying a weight, end dump trucks can be overloaded and cause wear and tear to its components. That can lead to accidents, breakdowns and other risks. If that happens, call Pro-Tow for dump truck recovery.

Flexing Our Muscles: How Much Can a Heavy-Duty Crane Style Wrecker Lift?

Flexing Our Muscles: How Much Can a Heavy-Duty Crane Style Wrecker Lift?

If you follow our blog and social media, you’ve seen many photos of Team Pro-Tow lifting some pretty heavy trucks and equipment out of sticky situations! We operate heavy-duty crane-style wreckers for accident recoveries, equipment recoveries and crane lift services.

Ever wonder how much one of those bad boys can lift? Well, it depends on several factors. For example, it depends on the heavy-duty wrecker, the manufacturer and how they’ve configured the crane. However, it’s no doubt that wreckers can lift substantial weights.

Lifting Against 180,000 Pounds

Back in 2016, Team Pro-Tow worked with the US Army Corps of Engineers to rescue an escavator out of deep mud in unfavorable terrain. Four heavy-duty wreckers worked with dump trucks, loaders, bulldozers, and excavators to complete this recovery. We estimate that we used about 200 tons of tow truck capacity to get that out. We also estimate that we were pulling against 180,000 pounds.

You can read about that recovery here: Towing Against 180,000lbs of Resistance.

90,000 Pounds of Cargo

Okay, so that was what four heavy-duty wreckers could lift. How about just one? Depending on the equipment, we can raise over 75,000 lbs. Often, we provide crane lift services during accident recoveries when a truck has tipped its trailer over.

In this incident in 2015, we lifted a trailer loaded with 90,000 lbs of beer-battered onion rings! Fortunately, we did it quickly and supplied a backup generator to keep the cargo cool during the recovery. It was a heavy load and a tasty one too!

You can read about that recovery here: Semi-Truck Accident Recovery on a Busy Interchange, Northbend, WA.

What Factors to Consider

It’s important to note that various factors impact the actual lifting capacity of a wrecker. For example, the length of the boom, the angle it lifts the load, and the condition of the crane’s components. The operator’s skill and experience also play a crucial role in safely and effectively using the wrecker to lift heavy loads.

Accident Recovery: What Goes Down, Must Come Up

Accident Recovery: What Goes Down, Must Come Up

After an incident on May 25, 2022, Team Pro-Tow was on hand to aid in an accident involving a minivan and a dump truck. It was an unfortunate situation that left both vehicles with significant damage. Pro-Tow responded to this accident recovery to rescue these vehicles.

Maybe you’ve heard the saying before, what comes up must go down. But, in this case, the scenario was the opposite. The dump truck in this accident flew over a metal guardrail and landed about 150 feet down into a steep embankment. So, we needed to bring it back up the roadway 150 feet.

We used our trusted and skilled Team Pro-Tow operators to build a recovery plan for this dump truck recovery. Our operators rigged up the dump truck in the ditch with careful effort. We did this to pull the dump truck on the road, removing it from the scene of the accident.

Submarined Car Needs Crane Lift

Submarined Car Needs Crane Lift

In this incident, on December 3rd, 2021, Team Pro-Tow was called in to help with a car that had gone into a retention pond in Maple Valley, WA. The dispatch came from the King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO), and the vehicle was completely submerged! We responded with an HD Crane Style Rotating Wrecker per KCSO’s request. This submarined car needed an emergency towing service!

Once we arrived, our team did a scene assessment to decide the best approach for the crane lift recovery. We agreed that moving the vehicle closer first would make the rescue safer. So, we coordinated with KCSO divers and got to work.

Underwater Emergency Towing Service

First, the KCSO divers went into the water to rig the vehicle. Then, we brought the car closer to the shore to continue the rescue and crane lift process. Once it was at the shoreline, we used the LD vehicle rigging kit to lift the vehicle out of the water. We continued lifting it, using the chance to drain as much water as possible. After the car drained, we dispatched a flatbed to transport the vehicle.

Crane Lift Finale

Meanwhile, as per KCSO’s request, we set the vehicle on the shore. Pro-Tow then removed all rigging, inspected it, and returned to its original location.

We waited until the flatbed arrived and then helped with loading the car onto it. We secured it with a four-point tie down to safely transport it back to the Auburn yard. Once it was there, we unloaded the vehicle in our Portable Parking Stall Containment Pond. Doing so ensures no hazardous fluid leaks out of the vehicle and into the ground.

Our team then reconditioned the equipment by cleaning and inspecting the straps used in the tie-down. Once we finished the paperwork, we gave the all-clear on this emergency towing service.

In addition, we offer in-house services to keep your fleet running at top quality through our Motorplex division. We can help with various services to keep your fleet running at its best. Learn more about our divisions at www.pro-tow.com.
