Backup Required for Trailer Fire Recovery

Backup Required for Trailer Fire Recovery

On December 26, 2021, Team Pro-Tow responded to a call from the Washington State Patrol. A trailer had caught on fire. It was the second trailer on a set of doubles and required immediate trailer fire recovery and accident cleanup.

This accident recovery was definitely a job for our heavy-duty wrecker. We got all the equipment together and set out to the scene. The weather was unfavourable, and we drove carefully due to icy road conditions.

Calling in Backup for the Burnt Trailer Towing

We saw that the fire had completely destroyed the tires when we arrived. Talk about burning rubber! Because of the damage, we needed to turn the dolly around for safe towing. Due to the extent of this trailer fire recovery, we had to call out for an additional person to help out.

Once they arrived, we could hook up the front of the trailer and maneuver the dolly around. Then, we could secure the dollies and tow the trailer from the scene using the ICC bumper.

Time for Accident Cleanup

Our Pro-Enviro division assisted with the extensive accident and road cleanup required for this recovery. A significant amount of debris was on the road surrounding the area. Team Pro-Enviro got to work clearing the debris and cleaning the roadway. Once complete, WSP opened the road back up to traffic.

Winter Conditions Cause Delays

Unfortunately, the road conditions were still poor due to winter weather. Pro-Tow drove slowly with chains on the tires to return that burnt trailer to the secure storage yard. Unfortunately, we could not tow it further because the roads were so bad. In addition, the trailer was so damaged from the fire that it wasn’t stable for safe transport.
So we dropped the trailer off in our yard to reassess. In the meantime, we could recondition our equipment and clear the call.

Fishing Out a Truck and Trailer

Fishing Out a Truck and Trailer

In this incident, on November 11, 2021, Team Pro-Tow received a dispatch from Washington State Police about a fully loaded trailer that had left the roadway. It went 100 feet off the road and hit a tree down an embankment. Fortunately, we were ready to help with the heavy truck recovery.

There were also reports of poor weather, including winter storms and flood warnings. We took note and included that information in our recovery plans. Then, we set out with an HD rotating crane-style wrecker, HD recovery wrecker, spill response vehicle, special equipment support vehicle, HD tractor and travelling axle, three-axle Landoll trailer and certified emergency recovery personnel. A lot of equipment, but all necessary for an accident recovery such as this one.

Once we arrived, we performed a scene evaluation to decide the best and safest approach to the recovery. Once we had a plan in mind, we set to work.

Heavy Truck Recovery First Up

To start, we performed an overhead crane lift of the separated tractor and brought it back onto the roadway. There, we set it on the Landoll trailer and continued. However, we first noticed engine oil, coolant, and motor vehicle diesel fuel was present. Our Team Pro-Enviro took care of the spill recovery aspect for us. They contained the spill to a practical extent so we could continue.

Next, we began recovering the trailer and its cargo. For roadway safety, we relocated our equipment to the side of the road 200 feet from the incident. We then set up a transportation rigging to transport our equipment back and forth.

It was an arduous task and non-routine. In addition, it took extraordinary time due to safety concerns of the deep and fast-travelling waterway. However, we never rush or skip a step, as safety for ourselves and others is always a top priority.

Accident Recovery Continues with Tractor in Pieces

Once we set up, we moved the trailer approximately 100 feet with minimal cargo escapement. Unfortunately, things didn’t stay easy. The trailer continually fell apart until it came completely apart.

We did non-routine cutting, lifting, loading, and finally securing. Once we loaded the trailer, we transported it to the secure storage yard. The cargo and part of the trailer remained on the side of the road until additional equipment could safely access it. Meanwhile, Pro-Enviro moved in to handle the debris recovery and spill cleanup work.

Calling in for Extra Help

While much of this work involved non-routine approaches, we never left a job half finished. Instead, we subcontracted extra equipment to finish the job. Using an excavator, two roll-off dumpsters, and a large end dump trailer. Then, we excavated the cargo and remaining debris into the containers. Finally, after plenty of paperwork, manifests, and extensive equipment reconditioning, we completed the accident recovery.

Accident Recovery: What Goes Down, Must Come Up

Accident Recovery: What Goes Down, Must Come Up

After an incident on May 25, 2022, Team Pro-Tow was on hand to aid in an accident involving a minivan and a dump truck. It was an unfortunate situation that left both vehicles with significant damage. Pro-Tow responded to this accident recovery to rescue these vehicles.

Maybe you’ve heard the saying before, what comes up must go down. But, in this case, the scenario was the opposite. The dump truck in this accident flew over a metal guardrail and landed about 150 feet down into a steep embankment. So, we needed to bring it back up the roadway 150 feet.

We used our trusted and skilled Team Pro-Tow operators to build a recovery plan for this dump truck recovery. Our operators rigged up the dump truck in the ditch with careful effort. We did this to pull the dump truck on the road, removing it from the scene of the accident.

Submarined Car Needs Crane Lift

Submarined Car Needs Crane Lift

In this incident, on December 3rd, 2021, Team Pro-Tow was called in to help with a car that had gone into a retention pond in Maple Valley, WA. The dispatch came from the King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO), and the vehicle was completely submerged! We responded with an HD Crane Style Rotating Wrecker per KCSO’s request. This submarined car needed an emergency towing service!

Once we arrived, our team did a scene assessment to decide the best approach for the crane lift recovery. We agreed that moving the vehicle closer first would make the rescue safer. So, we coordinated with KCSO divers and got to work.

Underwater Emergency Towing Service

First, the KCSO divers went into the water to rig the vehicle. Then, we brought the car closer to the shore to continue the rescue and crane lift process. Once it was at the shoreline, we used the LD vehicle rigging kit to lift the vehicle out of the water. We continued lifting it, using the chance to drain as much water as possible. After the car drained, we dispatched a flatbed to transport the vehicle.

Crane Lift Finale

Meanwhile, as per KCSO’s request, we set the vehicle on the shore. Pro-Tow then removed all rigging, inspected it, and returned to its original location.

We waited until the flatbed arrived and then helped with loading the car onto it. We secured it with a four-point tie down to safely transport it back to the Auburn yard. Once it was there, we unloaded the vehicle in our Portable Parking Stall Containment Pond. Doing so ensures no hazardous fluid leaks out of the vehicle and into the ground.

Our team then reconditioned the equipment by cleaning and inspecting the straps used in the tie-down. Once we finished the paperwork, we gave the all-clear on this emergency towing service.

In addition, we offer in-house services to keep your fleet running at top quality through our Motorplex division. We can help with various services to keep your fleet running at its best. Learn more about our divisions at www.pro-tow.com.

Mushrooms Down Accident Recovery

Mushrooms Down Accident Recovery

In this incident, on November 23, 2021, a truck and trailer carrying a load tipped over and needed help. Team Pro-Tow was called to the scene for the accident recovery, so we set out immediately.

Once we arrived, our team did a routine scene inspection to decide the best approach. Using our large inflatable lifting bags and some rigging would do the trick in this incident. The trailer load also appeared to be a mushroom product that needed some straightening.

Accident Recovery with Lifting Bags

Our team started by sliding the inflatable bags all along the underside of the trailer and then began inflating them. As they raised, it started lifting the truck and trailer. Once it was up enough, we could get some strap rigging on the unit to lift everything back onto its wheels fully. Our accident recovery task was completed with the trailer ready to roll and the mushroom product reloaded.

Trailer Recovery Methods

When it comes to rescuing trucks and trailers, our team has a few different approaches. While it comes down to the nature of the incident, we always bring our equipment and trained personnel for the job. However, in this case, with the trailer flat on its side, we couldn’t simply lift and rig the unit.

Instead, we utilize clever rescue mechanics when needed. As in this incident, we used inflatable air cushions to help out. These handy lifting bags can easily slide underneath a truck or trailer. Once in place, our team then begins slowly filling them with air. As the cushion fills up, it slowly lifts the unit into the air. We do this just enough to use our other equipment, whether rigging, a bobcat, crane or other tools. Once the bags have done their job, we can safely and efficiently finish the trailer recovery process and call it a day.
