Accident Recovery

Moses in the Median: Semi-Truck Recovery

In this incident, on April 2nd, 2020, TeamProTow received an emergency dispatch about a semi-tractor collision, and a loaded trailer stuck in the median. We dispatched a heavy-duty rotating crane-style wrecker and heavy-duty towing truck to the scene. On route, we learned the I90 had been closed due to the accident, so traffic was at a standstill.

Scene Assessment

At the scene, we met with the incident command post and assessed the situation. There was heavy debris, a vehicle in multiple pieces blocking the roadway, and a motor vehicle fluid spill.

We reported to the command post and got permission from the vehicle owner to do what was needed for semi-truck recovery. The incident command informed us that WSP would be doing a commercial vehicle enforcement investigation during the initial scene investigation. Only once both investigations were complete could our team begin the recovery.

Recovery Work

Our team got to work with permission given to use the Westbound lanes for our semi-truck recovery work. We set up rigging and recovery equipment and managed to get traffic flowing as we worked. Since we were working uphill, extra calculations and precautions were put into play.

We managed to move the tractor and trailer combination until it became clear the fuel tanks were at risk of further damage and causing a fuel spill. Our team had to stop due to the unstable terrain causing issues with the loaded trailer. We decided to return in the morning with a new plan and meanwhile cleared away the equipment and roadway of any debris.

Semi-truck Recovery

The next day WSDOT approved traffic management plans, and we dispatched a traffic management company and got an attenuator trailer device. In addition to the original equipment, we also brought a heavy-duty recovery wrecker, compact track loader, dump trailer, flatbed tow truck, and another medium duty tow truck. Fully loaded and ready to go, our team set out for the scene once again for heavy-duty towing and recovery.

Once they set up traffic control, we began our recovery work. We found that 20 to 30 gallons of fuel oil and engine coolant had spilled into the soil. First, we safely rigged and moved the tractor and trailer to the roadside. Then, TeamProEnviro did a complete cleanup of the roadway and median.

The damage was extensive enough that we had to transport the combination without separating, despite trying to do so twice. Instead, our team transported the combination and our equipment back to the storage yard with professional heavy-duty towing.

To stop any spill contamination, we installed a portable parking stall containment berm and reconditioned the equipment. We manifested and transported all debris and contaminated soil. Later, outside of work hours, we did a non-routine mechanical separation for the tractor and trailer. Only then did we complete the paperwork and give the cleared call.

Heavy Truck Tow for Sysco on Witte

In this incident, on May 18th, 2020, Team Pro-Tow responded to a dispatch for a truck and trailer that had gone off the roadway into the ditch on Witte Road. The trailer had a 30,000 lbs load, and together with the truck, the entire lift was over 60,000 lbs. The road was narrow, which made it challenging to complete this heavy truck tow.

Recovery Plan with a Rotating Crane Style Wrecker

We needed an HD rotating crane-style wreck and HD wrecker to get this truck recovery done. Unfortunately, drivers kept crossing our cones and into the safety zone. We needed traffic control to help out to get our equipment to work on the narrow roadway.

After creating a safe recovery plan, we needed to set things up to avoid overhead power lines and a low overpass while performing a 60-foot truck and trailer lift. It was a challenging heavy truck tow, but thankfully damage hadn’t caused an oil pan leak.

We decided to winch forward, setting the recovery truck in front of the casualty. We set up the rotating crane-style wrecker to perform a rear overhead light and reposition the truck and trailer on the road.

Working Hard to Minimize Damage

When lifting such a huge, cumbersome load, our team takes extra steps to minimize damage to the truck and trailer. In this case, we used soft recovery straps and secured the frame with shackles to keep it from breaking up. We also used strap protectors to prevent damage. We configured a wood frame around the left gate too. These extra safety precautions prevented the trailer from further damage.

Time to Lift

When our crane-style wrecker performed the overhead lift, it registered 28,000 pounds with the load leaning to the rear. As you could imagine, slow and steady work was the only way to prevent damage.
Our team carefully operated the rotator in harmony with the recovery truck parked in the front. We finally were able to get the truck and trailer back on the roadway and positioned for a heavy truck tow. We removed all the rigging and towed the casualty to a safe location.

The Grinder: Logging Road Truck Accident Recovery

On June 19th, 2020, We received an emergency dispatch about an overturned Kenworth T800, Loadking Lowboy, and a Vermeer stump grinder. The load had overturned while on a logging road when the trailer didn’t make the turn. We requested and received photos of the accident to review and form a plan for this complicated crane services job.

We put together the required equipment for the job. Equipment included a heavy-duty rotating crane style wrecker, a heavy-duty recovery wrecker, a heavy incident special equipment, and a support truck. We called in trained and certified recovery operators and headed out to the job.

Multistep Truck Accident Recovery

The scene had limited road access, making things difficult. We needed a heavy truck accident recovery unit and a trained and certified operator to help. We also found leaking motor vehicle oils and fluids, but the customer said they would mediate the cleanup over the following days.

With narrow space available on the road, equipment placement needed to be precisely placed. After first disconnecting the grinder from the trailer, we began the truck accident recovery. We used all three recovery units for the truck and trailer’s successful and safe righting (now with even less road space to use). Still, our skilled team even managed to avoid any extra damage. The unit was then hooked up and moved to a nearby safe location. Once there, the customer towed it away.

Grinder Recovery

The final part of this truck accident recovery was the grinder. It was down vertically and 15 feet approximately from the narrow road. On top of that, it had become embedded in the dirt embankment and then pinned by existing stumps. Setting up the rotator for crane services took extra time. It had to be safe, given the road’s slope and narrowness. While our team was able to right the grinder, it stayed stuck in the embankment and stumps. As it began to get dark, it also started to rain.

The equipment was moved and repositioned for a new angle, and the recovery attempted again and again. Our team even tried attaching the equipment to an old-growth stump, but that didn’t work. Finally, the customer got the grinder running, which let our team perform a difficult but still safe crane service recovery. Throughout these many hours of hard work, safety breaks were enforced and repeatedly taken for our team. That way, injury, fatigue, and possible mistakes were all avoided.

Final Recovery

With the grinder recovery successful, our team began taking down and temporarily storing the multiple equipment sets. As a team, we handled the cleanup, storage, and loading and only left together. Reconditioning and returning the equipment to its original condition took several days. Still, we completed the paperwork and got the cleared call.

Dominion in the Median: Heavy Truck Tow

On November 11th, 2020, Team Pro-Tow responded to a call for a tractor-and-trailer that had gotten stuck in the median. They needed a heavy truck tow. Since no one could tell us whether the tractor or two trailers were still upright, we called Washington State Patrol (WSP) and updated them on the situation.

We got recovery vehicles from the yard before heading out to the scene for this truck accident response.

Assessment and Planning

Once Team Pro-Tow arrived, we contacted both the driver for signatures and a WSP trooper. The trooper told us that the customer was in charge, so we began formulating a recovery plan. 10 to 15 gallons of fluid had also spilled onto the roadway. Because of traffic control and safety concerns, spill cleanup had to wait. First, we had to focus on the truck accident response and get that truck out of the way.

Truck Accident Response

Our team set up a mobile rotating crane for recovery and rigged the vehicle. Once done, we supplied air to the tractor and revealed a significant air leak behind a crushed part of the frame and support brace. We couldn’t repair the air leak, so we caged the brakes and supplied air to the trailer instead. We moved the unit back to the roadway, where we then hooked the tractor and trailers together. WSP recommended the nearest safest location to move the rig.

Once there, we completed the heavy truck tow separated the tractor and trailers. Upon request, we towed the trailers to the Old Dominion yard. The tractor stayed hooked up and was towed to the Freightliner body shop, also as requested. We left the tractor at the bay. Then our team returned to the yard and got the equipment ready for the next job.

Next-Day Clean Up

The next day, we contacted the Department of Transportation and Traffic Control Company to handle the roadway cleanup. Team Pro-Enviro brought a compact tracked loader with a bucket to clean up as per the Department of Ecology standards. We disposed of all contaminated soil, and samples were taken and dropped off.

Snowslide at 61 Needs Heavy Duty Towing

On November 10th, 2020, during the winter months, Pro-Tow is always ready and prepared for the inevitable roadway slide-offs. In this incident, Team Pro-Tow received an emergency dispatch for a tractor-trailer that had done just that. They needed heavy-duty towing. The roadway pass conditions were extreme enough that both directions were closed down. We responded quickly to the call.

We brought a heavy-duty, rotating, crane-style wrecker and then performed a scene assessment. First of all, we needed traffic control since the traffic conditions and location required it. DOT and WSP were contacted to help. Once traffic was under control, we then performed recovery calculations and set up the rotator for a 3-part recovery. This heavy truck towing included supporting the trailer, then winching forward, and finally repositioning the tractor to move it towards the lane one shoulder. Team Pro-Tow worked efficiently and successfully moved everything forward.

Part Two Recovery

It was a safety risk that the trailer might roll at the roadway shoulder, so we needed an additional recovery truck. Because of the safety risk, we first required authorization from the customer. We contacted WSP, and they gave full authorization. The second heavy duty towing truck arrived, and our team successfully installed the new rigging.

We worked in lane one while keeping lane two open at the request of the DOT and WSP. We did a crane lift of the trailer’s rear and the tractor’s front ax while doing multiple drag winch to the trailer’s center points. Our team worked steadily and safely, putting precautions first for a successful heavy truck towing scenario.

All Clear

The heavy-duty towing recovery was successful! We disconnected the rigging and temporarily stowed it to relocate the casualty to a safer nearby location. We returned all equipment to its original condition and location. The recovery process didn’t damage the truck further or stop it from driving on its own. Our team then returned to our home location, reconditioned the equipment for the next call, and completed all paperwork.
