Avoid Accidents with These Semi-Truck Winter Driving Tips

Avoid Accidents with These Semi-Truck Winter Driving Tips

When you take your fleet out on the road over the winter months, you could face several different road conditions. In the Pacific Northwest, this unpredictable weather includes wet and heavy snowfalls that can decrease visibility, especially at night. Understanding how to navigate these roads will help you avoid semi-truck accidents, like this semi that found itself wrapped around a tree.

With winter on its way, here we share some essential semi-truck winter driving tips to help keep your drivers safe and trucks on the road.

Monitor Your Tire Pressure

In the winter and colder months, you must monitor your tire pressure. When the temperatures initially drop, your tires can lose a significant amount of pressure. Low tire pressure is a culprit for semi-truck accidents and poor fuel economy.

Slow Down

Driving slowly and carefully should go without saying. But whether you’re dealing with icy, slick roads, wet slush or low visibility due to heavy snowfall (or all of the above), do your best to drive slowly — that means slower than you usually would. Driving slowly and cautiously when going around corners in winter weather is especially important. Also, remember to give yourself more time to get to your destination. This way, you won’t feel as inclined to push the limits in winter driving conditions.

Leave More Space

One of the best semi-truck winter driving tips is to leave more space between you and other drivers when the roads aren’t good. If possible, double or triple the space you normally leave. Adding space between you and the vehicles ahead can be especially helpful if you don’t know the area you’re driving in. When you can anticipate a deep curve or a hill that might be coming up, it will help you prepare for it and avoid accidents.

Furthermore, if you’re in a passenger vehicle, give those semi-trucks lots of room! They take more time to slow down, turn, and accelerate – especially in winter driving conditions. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Throwback: Overturned Truck Recovery in Auburn, WA

Throwback: Overturned Truck Recovery in Auburn, WA

In this incident on January 28, 2017, a Hino box truck completely overturned on SR167 in Auburn, WA. This truck recovery in Auburn required the expert help of Team Pro-Tow. We arrived at the accident with our rigging equipment and assessed the scene. We decided the safest, quickest and best approach to rig the box truck to prevent further damage and open the roadway back up to traffic.

First, we rigged the bottom of the truck to pull it forward and place the vehicle back on its wheels. Once done, we loaded it onto the tow truck, safely transported it away from the scene and called this truck accident recovery complete!

Check out the video below to see how we did it!

Box Truck Loading Safety

When loading a box truck, it’s essential to distribute the load’s weight throughout the cargo box evenly. In addition, you must properly strapped down and secure the load within the box. Doing so avoids the risk of the weight shifting while driving and causing an imbalance. A sudden weight shift risks the truck tipping over when taking a turn and can cause an incident like the truck recovery in Auburn we mentioned above.

Drive Safely

How you drive also plays a significant role in preventing turnovers and accidents. Don’t take turns too sharply or quickly. Doing so can damage the wheel axles or the tires and compromise the box truck’s driving.

Likewise, drive extra slowly if the roads are slick from rain or ice. Whether the box truck is full or empty, a slippery road is a sure combination to cause an accident needing a truck accident recovery in Auburn.

When In Trouble, Call the Pros

Call the pros if you have a load shift problem, overturned truck, or damaged axles. Team Pro-Tow has the team, equipment and knowledge to help with any truck accident recovery. We can provide onsite or on-road repairs and tow your vehicle to our Motorplex shops in Auburn or Spokane.

Double Camper Turnover Holds Up Traffic

Double Camper Turnover Holds Up Traffic

It’s rare for a camper to flip over. In this case, two campers that were being transported flipped over on July 18, 2019. Pro-Tow’s heavy-duty towing service was called to Highway 18 near Snoqualmie, WA to help turnover not one, but two new campers that had an accident during transport. They were blocking traffic at the busy intersection at Interstate 90 and Highway 18.

These campers were new, and so, this heavy-duty towing and accident recovery had to be done carefully to prevent further damage. The campers had to be removed quickly as traffic was beginning to jam up. We used a heavy-duty crane style wrecker to perform the overhead lifting. As always, the team worked with safety top-of-mind and was able to get the campers removed from the scene quickly, opening traffic again.

Can Campers and RVs Turn Over Easily?

So, these campers weren’t attached to a truck when they turned over, but if you carry or tow a camper you should still be aware of the slight turnover risk. A lot of factors come into play for your RV to flip. The size of the RV, it’s weight, the direction of any wind and how fast or tight you are taking corners. Even the wind caused by a semi-truck speeding passed can cause a camper to become unstable.

If your camper is going to tip, you might hear a groaning or creaking sound coming from it. You might feel the pull as it starts to go. Therefore, it’s essential to have all passengers in the vehicle with seatbelts fastened, not the camper, when the vehicle is in motion.

What Do You Do if Your Camper Flips?

The first thing you and other passengers should do, if you’re not injured, is to exit the vehicle and get to a safe place on the side of the road. Once you’ve done that, you should contact the police and inform them of the accident, especially if it is holding up traffic. They might come and start to direct traffic while the accident is being recovered.

Then you need to call to have the camper towed away. That’s where Pro-Tow comes in. Regardless of the size of your unit, we have the heavy-duty towing equipment to get it upright, on a flatbed if necessary and towed away. Depending on the damage, you can decide to have the camper fixed or to write it off.

90lbs of Wood Debris Spills in a Semi-Truck Accident in Kirkland, WA

Our Pro-Enviro division responds to the scene when there is diesel fuel, oil or other vehicle fluids spilled after a semi-truck accident. They weren’t needed in this case. This semi-truck end dump truck lost over 90lbs of wood debris, which thankfully, is completely biodegradable.

The end dump truck flipped onto its side during rush hour traffic on Interstate 405, north of Bellevue in Kirkland, WA. They required a prompt semi-truck tow service to get the truck back on its wheels and moved, so traffic could start flowing again. Our team provided this service, developing a recovery plan upon arriving at the semi-truck accident and executing it safely and effectively.

What is an End Dump Truck?

Almost all dump trucks use a hydraulic system to lift the bed used to transport material, but these systems come in various configurations. The most common dump truck will have an open-boxed bed that is in the rear of the truck. This box is lifted by hydraulic rams at the front, thus dumping the material out of the back of it.

An end dump truck also called a semi-trailer end dump truck, has the hydraulic dump system on a trailer that is pulled by the tractor. The dumping system is not attached to the truck itself. In the US, most end dump trucks have a 2-axle trailer with dual tires that is pulled by a 3-axle semi-tractor. The beds on these trailer end dumps are massive. They are used when more debris or material needs to be moved than a regular dump truck could carry.

The disadvantage? They’re unstable when raised in the dumping position. If the ground isn’t level, you typically couldn’t or shouldn’t use a semi-trailer end dump truck for the job. It could result in a semi-truck accident. Because this type of truck is larger and its operating parts more complex, they require a specialized semi-truck tow service to get them upright again if flipped. As always, Pro-Tow was up to the challenge.
