Holy Smoked – Burnt Out Truck Accident Recovery

Holy Smoked – Burnt Out Truck Accident Recovery

This summer and fall, Washington State was in crisis mode due to wildfires. In this incident on September 10, 2020, during this wildfire crisis, a battery cable shorted out in this truck while the driver was asleep in the sleeper berth. It started a fire, destroying the tractor. Fortunately, the driver was able to evacuate and get to safety in time.

Team Pro-Tow and Team Pro-Enviro were called to the scene to assist with the truck accident recovery and spill recovery. The tractor was destroyed and was lifted onto a flatbed trailer for transport. The trailer, though it suffered notable damage, was in good enough shape to be towed away.

Once the tractor and trailer were out of the way, we got to work on the spill recovery. With the help of industry partners, we got to work clearing debris and cleaning the contaminated area. After a long day on the job, we completed the truck accident recovery. The scene was cleaned up and looking like it never happened.

What Causes Vehicle Fires?

A failure in a vehicle’s electrical system is one of the leading causes of vehicle fires. Battery cables carry enough current to ignite anything combustible. If the cables have frayed or are losing insulation, it can cause a short circuit. A charging battery will produce hydrogen gas, and this is combustible. Combine the two, and you’ll likely have a fire.

There are things in the vehicle’s electrical system to help prevent arcing and short-circuiting. Fuses and circuit breakers add safety to the system, but all components can break down over time. Poor installation or repair jobs and not regularly inspecting the system can render these safeguards useless in extreme cases.

While proper maintenance of your fleet vehicles can help prevent most vehicle fires, accidents still can happen. In this case, it was fortunate the driver woke up in time to escape safely from the vehicle.

Truck Accident Recovery for Dump Truck Ditched in Ravensdale

Truck Accident Recovery for Dump Truck Ditched in Ravensdale

On March 6th, 2020, Sometimes we don’t know how extensive an accident is until we arrive on the scene. With this incident, a dump truck had landed itself in the ditch. We received a dispatch for truck accident recovery and provided a quote to the customer based on the images we had received. He declined but called back later in the day, asking for one of our trucks to come out to help with a straight and forced winch extraction.

When Team Pro-Tow arrived on the scene, we discovered an incredible fuel spill had occurred from the accident. We estimate around 50 gallons of fuel on the ground with considerable groundwater contamination. This truck accident recovery was a job for Pro-Enviro Spill Response. We were not prepared at the moment to safely handle the truck accident recovery properly.

Team Pro Enviro To The Rescue

The next day, we got the call to come to clean up the mess, and we went prepared with Pro-Enviro’s full spill recovery and response equipment and supplies. We also needed some heavy-duty machinery to deal with the ditched dump truck. That included a heavy-duty crane wrecker, recovery wrecker, recovery support vehicle, and all the trained operators to get the job done.

On the scene, we saw that the client had vacuum trucks already working on the initial clean up stages. Once that was complete, we accessed the incident and came up with a plan for spill recovery and truck accident recovery. Once our cranes performed an overhead lift of the dump truck to get it back on the road, we got to work cleaning up the spilled fuel.

Fixed The Leaky Tank

Because of regulations and a general concern for safety and the environment, we could not transport the damaged dump truck before fixing the leak in the fuel tank. We were able to give it a temporary fix to keep it from dripping fuel on the route. Then we took it to a secured storage yard and installed a portable parking stall containment berm to prevent any potential leaks from contaminating the area.

The Faster the Response, the Better

When there is a fuel or oil leak involved, the faster you can get a spill recovery team on the scene, the better. In this case, it took several calls and visits before the proper truck accident recovery team and equipment arrived to help. In the meantime, spilled fuel continued to spread and contaminate the area around the accident. The more extensive the spill, the more expensive the cleanup. Remember, the cleanup and cost is the responsibility of the truck company in the accident.

Upside Down Outback – Truck Accident Recovery Goes Into The Night

Upside Down Outback – Truck Accident Recovery Goes Into The Night

On August 30, 2019 Pro-Tow 24 Hour Towing responded to an emergency dispatch from the Washington State Police (WSP) and arrived on the scene to find a rolled over camper trailer, full-sized pickup truck and a trailer carrying two Sea-Doos. It was a full rollover collision at MM39 on the EB Interstate 90, east of North Bend, WA that required extensive truck accident recovery tactics to remediate.

Equipped To Get The Job Done

After a debrief from the WSP, we dispatched both a medium-duty wrecker and a heavy-duty crane-style wrecker, a light-duty flatbed tow truck and a heavy-duty tow truck complete with a Landoll trailer. Pro-Tow’s trained operators had to navigate traffic to assemble on the scene but were full equipped to tackle this truck accident recovery job.

Getting The Job Done

After receiving written authorization from the owners of the vehicles and trailer, we got to work recovering the scene. First, we started with the pickup truck accident recovery. We had to cut it from the trailer hitch and safety chains using a cut-off saw and other power tools. The team used the rotator to safely disconnect the truck from the turned-over trailer. We installed the rigging to upright the truck and return it to the roadway. From there, we hooked it up and got it on the flatbed tow truck.

With the truck done, it was time to move onto the trailer. This camper was worse for wear, badly damaged and dislodged slightly from its frame. Our operators used extensive rigging and safety procedures to prevent the trailer from falling apart further, even exploding. Using an overhead crane lift, we were able to lift and secure the camper on the Landsoll trailer.

Next, the Sea-Doos. We recovered both Sea-Doos, the trailer they were on and various debris by lifting them onto the Landsoll trailer. Everything was strapped down appropriately to eliminate the risk of debris flying off the trailer during transport.

We took the load and vehicles to our secure storage yard temporarily. Our equipment was returned to our location for cleaning and reconditioning, so they could be ready to head out to another call.

Catch of the Day: An Overturned Box Truck

Catch of the Day: An Overturned Box Truck

A box truck flipped over and landed itself in a creek. When it came off the road, the front end became wedged against a large bush, contorting the box and damaging the connection between the box and the truck itself. This truck accident recovery required a full crane lift to fish it out of the creek. Watch the video to see how we lifted the box and truck with our new crane. It did feel a lot like fishing, and we caught ourselves a big one.

The Main Causes of Truck Overturns

The leading cause of a semi-truck overturn is a centrifugal force. If a truck is traveling along a curved road, that force will cause it to lean away from the direction of the curve. If it leans too much, it can roll over and require truck accident recovery services.

Box trucks like this one are more vulnerable because the trailer has a high center of gravity. How the box is loaded can make a huge difference in stability and safety. If the load isn’t balanced correctly, it is more likely to flip over on the road.

Tips for Preventing a Shifting Load

When loading a box truck, the loaders must be aware of how heavy the load is, and the overall weight distribution of the load in the box or trailer. Stacking loads higher near the cab is a common mistake. Uneven stacking could put too much weight on the front axle. The front axle typically has about half the gross axle weight rating of the rear axle.

Try to keep the load flat and even, and then make sure it is adequately secured. Pallets can shift easily on the road if they’re not strapped down, shrink-wrapped and centered. Always consider how every pallet and box will be contained while the truck is in motion. If the load shifts on the road and the truck is taking a curve, that truck and driver could require truck accident recovery. Contribute to the safety of the driver and everyone else on the road with careful, proper loading before the truck even pulls out of the lot.
