Seattle Fire Trucks Needs Heavy Duty Towing Service

Seattle Fire Trucks Needs Heavy Duty Towing Service

On November 18th, 2019, Pro-Tow was called to assist with heavy-duty towing for a disabled Fire Truck in downtown Seattle. The Fire Truck was a specially equipped Pierce Taylor Ladder Truck, so it required an extraordinary tow truck and special training to handle its recovery. Once we were able to safely secure the fire truck to our heavy-duty towing truck, we towed the truck back to the Seattle Fire Department Maintenance Department.

Heavy Duty Fire Trucks Require Heavy Duty Help

For this recovery, Pro-Tow had to use an extraordinary tow truck to help with this truck accident recovery. The reason for this is because the average fire truck can weigh between 36,000 to 60,000 pounds. At Pro-Tow, our heavy-duty towing services cover class 7 and up trucks. Class 7 trucks range between 26,001 and 33,000 pounds, while class 8 covers trucks that are over 33,0001 pounds. That’s why for a truck this heavy, Pro-Tow used our heavy-duty towing to handle the job!

Fire Trucks Are Different From Fire Engines

Despite looking the same, a fire truck and a fire engine are different from one another. Fire trucks, like the one mentioned in this recovery blog, are equipped with a large aerial ladder. These extend out from the truck but don’t detach. The truck also has special equipment for search and rescue, forced entry and various types and lengths of ground ladders. Fire trucks will always have a captain and three other firefighters. A captain is identifiable by their red helmet, while the firefighters wear yellow helmets.

A fire engine looks like a fire truck but without the big aerial ladder. These are equipped with hoses, tools and ground ladders. Water tanks, pumps and various types of hoses are the key components of a fire engine, which all help with putting out fires. The water hoses on these fire engines can run up to 300 meters in length. The standard fire engine itself is also able to carry upwards of 2000 litres of water.

Upside Down Outback – Truck Accident Recovery Goes Into The Night

Upside Down Outback – Truck Accident Recovery Goes Into The Night

On August 30, 2019 Pro-Tow 24 Hour Towing responded to an emergency dispatch from the Washington State Police (WSP) and arrived on the scene to find a rolled over camper trailer, full-sized pickup truck and a trailer carrying two Sea-Doos. It was a full rollover collision at MM39 on the EB Interstate 90, east of North Bend, WA that required extensive truck accident recovery tactics to remediate.

Equipped To Get The Job Done

After a debrief from the WSP, we dispatched both a medium-duty wrecker and a heavy-duty crane-style wrecker, a light-duty flatbed tow truck and a heavy-duty tow truck complete with a Landoll trailer. Pro-Tow’s trained operators had to navigate traffic to assemble on the scene but were full equipped to tackle this truck accident recovery job.

Getting The Job Done

After receiving written authorization from the owners of the vehicles and trailer, we got to work recovering the scene. First, we started with the pickup truck accident recovery. We had to cut it from the trailer hitch and safety chains using a cut-off saw and other power tools. The team used the rotator to safely disconnect the truck from the turned-over trailer. We installed the rigging to upright the truck and return it to the roadway. From there, we hooked it up and got it on the flatbed tow truck.

With the truck done, it was time to move onto the trailer. This camper was worse for wear, badly damaged and dislodged slightly from its frame. Our operators used extensive rigging and safety procedures to prevent the trailer from falling apart further, even exploding. Using an overhead crane lift, we were able to lift and secure the camper on the Landsoll trailer.

Next, the Sea-Doos. We recovered both Sea-Doos, the trailer they were on and various debris by lifting them onto the Landsoll trailer. Everything was strapped down appropriately to eliminate the risk of debris flying off the trailer during transport.

We took the load and vehicles to our secure storage yard temporarily. Our equipment was returned to our location for cleaning and reconditioning, so they could be ready to head out to another call.

Catch of the Day: An Overturned Box Truck

Catch of the Day: An Overturned Box Truck

A box truck flipped over and landed itself in a creek. When it came off the road, the front end became wedged against a large bush, contorting the box and damaging the connection between the box and the truck itself. This truck accident recovery required a full crane lift to fish it out of the creek. Watch the video to see how we lifted the box and truck with our new crane. It did feel a lot like fishing, and we caught ourselves a big one.

The Main Causes of Truck Overturns

The leading cause of a semi-truck overturn is a centrifugal force. If a truck is traveling along a curved road, that force will cause it to lean away from the direction of the curve. If it leans too much, it can roll over and require truck accident recovery services.

Box trucks like this one are more vulnerable because the trailer has a high center of gravity. How the box is loaded can make a huge difference in stability and safety. If the load isn’t balanced correctly, it is more likely to flip over on the road.

Tips for Preventing a Shifting Load

When loading a box truck, the loaders must be aware of how heavy the load is, and the overall weight distribution of the load in the box or trailer. Stacking loads higher near the cab is a common mistake. Uneven stacking could put too much weight on the front axle. The front axle typically has about half the gross axle weight rating of the rear axle.

Try to keep the load flat and even, and then make sure it is adequately secured. Pallets can shift easily on the road if they’re not strapped down, shrink-wrapped and centered. Always consider how every pallet and box will be contained while the truck is in motion. If the load shifts on the road and the truck is taking a curve, that truck and driver could require truck accident recovery. Contribute to the safety of the driver and everyone else on the road with careful, proper loading before the truck even pulls out of the lot.

Semi Truck Spill Recovery Saves Local Waterways

Semi Truck Spill Recovery Saves Local Waterways

Pro-Tow Responds to a Diesel Fuel Spill Containment Emergency in Tacoma, Washington.

When there is a hazardous spill caused by a semi truck accident, immediate response is required to reduce environmental impact. On August 2, 2016 after refueling, this semi truck’s trailer disconnected from the tractor, causing it to smash into the road and damage the diesel fuel tank.

Diesel had spilled and Pro-Tow was among many first responders on the scene including the Fife Fire Department, Fife Police Department, Fife Public Works, Department of Ecology and Love’s Truck Stop. Thanks to everyone quick response and hard work, the spill was contained, and no diesel leaked into nearby storm drains and waterways.

Why is fast response so important with semi truck spill recovery?

Simply put, you need to get the contaminant clean up quickly to reduce damage to the environment. A spill can contaminate waterways directly or through storm drains. It can also contaminate the ground and soil. If you get it contained before that happens, recovery will be far less extensive.

Not only is quick action better for the environment, it will also reduce your company’s spill recovery costs too. If you get it before it does too much damage, the clean up can be minimal.

What can a logistics company do to prepare for these kinds of accidents?

Any company that operates commercial vehicles should have a spill recovery plan in place. This plan should lay out responsibilities of staff and include a list of emergency numbers to call. On this list of contacts, you should include emergency response, regulatory agencies, applicable environmental protection agencies and semi truck spill recovery contractors like Pro-Tow. This way, you’ll know exactly who to call and will have all the information required to respond quickly and accurately.

When you have Pro-Tow on your emergency spill response team, you can count on us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Working along side fire, police, public works and other agencies, we will access the situation, contain and clean up the spill as quickly as possible. Semi Truck Accident Recovery On A Busy Interchange – Northbend, WA

Semi Truck Accident Recovery On A Busy Interchange – Northbend, WA

Pro-Tow Had Traffic Flowing In Just 35 Minutes.

When there is an accident involving a semi, you need a heavy duty towing service that can get the job done quickly and safely. In this semi truck accident on June 23, 2015, a truck carrying 90,000lbs of beer battered onion rings overturned on Highway 18, near North Bend, WA.

It was right at the interchange from Interstate 90 to Westbound 18, so this incident needed quick truck accident recovery services to allow traffic to flow. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured in this accident, but the truck suffered some heavy damage.

Pro-Tow 24-hour towing responded to the semi truck accident with the special equipment necessary to recover the site quickly, efficiently and safely. Our team of highly trained tow drivers met each challenge with their experience and expertise. Like every call we get, the Pro-Tow team quickly developed a plan that got the site fully operational in as little time possible. We had the semi turned back over, site recovered and traffic flowing with just 35 minutes of blocking traffic.

There was some damage to the generator that ran the refrigeration in the truck’s cargo hold. Thankfully our team was able to repair the generator, get power back running to the refrigeration unit and save the onion rings. Thought the trailer and truck in this incident was unable to continue transport, load recovery was possible – the silver lining in an unfortunate accident.

Why Do Semi Trucks Overturn?

Semi trucks can flip over when they change directions too quickly or there is an unbalanced load. It’s all about physics. If a semi truck is driving around a curve, there will be a centrifugal force pushing it away from the direction of the curb. Going to fast, having an unbalanced load or a turn that’s too tight can strengthen that centrifugal force and make the truck tip.

These trucks are made for hauling, so they’re massive. Therefore, they were not designed for maneuverability. While drivers can be as careful as possible, our clients can rest assured knowing that the Pro-Tow team is ready to respond to any accidents that might occur with our 24-hour heavy duty semi truck tow service. Using our fleet of specialized, heavy-duty tow equipment, our experienced team will get your truck right-side-up and the site restored as quickly as possible.
