What You Need to Know About Heavy Equipment Hauling

What You Need to Know About Heavy Equipment Hauling

When you need to haul heavy equipment, it is no small task. You require knowledgeable operators and specialized equipment. Keeping safety a top priority is critical. Operators must load, secure, transport the load efficiently and comply with local regulations.

Team Pro-Tow specializes in crane lift services, heavy-duty towing, heavy equipment recovery and heavy equipment hauling. You’ve got it covered if you need something heavy lifted, loaded, and moved.

What is Considered “Heavy?”

Heavy equipment is typically something that weighs over 5,000 pounds. For example, it could be an excavator, tractor, or other heavy construction equipment. When loads are heavier than this, like 10,000 pounds or more, the operator must have specific certification and training to do the job. For example, they must know how to distribute the weight properly and safely secure the load for transport. Without the proper know-how, safety can be an issue.

Following Regulations

The load’s weight, size and dimensions will determine which Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations you’ll need to follow for heavy equipment hauling. In addition, oversized equipment or cargo sometimes needs a permit for transportation, depending on the state you’re registered in and traveling through. These are things Team Pro-Tow can help you determine when we perform heavy equipment recovery or hauling.

Double (Triple) Check

When a massive load or a piece of heavy equipment is on a flatbed trailer, we double and triple-check to ensure it is secured properly. We check anchor points, rigging and securing anything that might become loose during transport. It must be loaded and secured and compliant with DOT regulations.

Choose the Best for Heavy Equipment Recovery

If you need something big moved out of an awkward spot or transported to another site, choose Pro-Tow for heavy equipment hauling. We have extensive experience, trained and certified operators, and crane-style wreckers to get the equipment on the trailer. We can handle semi-tractors, loaded trailers, construction equipment, heavy machinery, and more.
If it’s big and heavy, and you need it moved, call Team Pro-Tow!

Heavy Equipment Towing: Getting Unstuck in Spokane

Heavy Equipment Towing: Getting Unstuck in Spokane

In this incident, on May 5, 2023, a Genie Z-80 boom lift got stuck in the gravel on a residential construction site. According to the manufacturer’s specifications, this heavy-duty equipment weighs about 37,500 pounds! Despite being a 4×4, this magic Genie was stuck deep and needed heavy equipment towing.

This thing wasn’t going to budge without some help. The construction company renting the Genie lift called Team Pro-Tow to help unstuck this stuck piece of heavy equipment. We got to work and performed a successful heavy equipment recovery.

Heavy Equipment Safety

Keeping your heavy equipment stable and on firm ground will help avoid needing heavy equipment towing. However, in this case, the operator likely suspected the gravel was more compact than it was.

All pieces of heavy equipment, including booms, will have a specific chassis angle limit. This limit indicates the slope or elevated surface grade that the machine can safely operate without tipping or sinking. The chassis slop can be impacted by the angle of the surface and other obstacles like raised walkways, ramps, or loose gravel.

Operators should conduct a scene assessment before moving equipment in. The slope grade and any obstacles must be measured and considered during the assessment. Being aware of your surroundings and the machine’s limits can help avoid the need for heavy equipment recovery.

If you rent the equipment, work with the rental staff to review your needs and the site’s conditions. They can help you prevent incidents and reduce downtime by selecting a boom lift that can work within limits presented at your job site.

Pro-Tow to the Rescue

Fortunately, Team Pro-Tow has the proper trucks and equipment to get the heaviest and most-stuck equipment out of a jam. In this case, we were able to free the Genie lift quickly so that the construction company could proceed with their work. Quick recovery services can reduce downtime and help mitigate the cost of calling for heavy equipment towing.

Pro-Tow offers round-the-clock emergency towing services. While many of our recoveries involve semi-trucks and other heavy trucks, equipment recovery is also a service we offer. We once helped lift a military tank to change a flat tire! If you need something heavy lifted and moved, we can help. Learn more about Pro-Tow services.

Equipment Recovery: Untipping a Tipped Excavator

Equipment Recovery: Untipping a Tipped Excavator

On March 23, 2021, a brand new excavator hit a bridge, rolled over, and required heavy equipment recovery. Team Pro-Tow used our heavy-duty crane-style wrecker to lift the excavator back on solid ground.

Our skilled operators are trained in a range of rigging techniques to properly perform a crane lift on equipment and objects of all shapes, sizes, and weights. Fortunately, we lifted this excavator without causing further damage to the machine.

How To Prevent an Excavator from Tipping

Operator error and lack of planning is the leading cause of tipping excavators and needing heavy equipment recovery. You should always ensure it’s on solid, flat, and dry ground when operating. Check manufacturer guidelines for safe operating ratios if you must work on a slope. Even if you know your machine, a stump or rock could cause it to lose footing and slide. Likewise, if the edge of the excavator catches a point or base of a slope, it probably will tip over.

When driving, pay attention to the direction of travel. Most excavators allow the cab to rotate 360 degrees, but the tracks always go in the same direction regardless of how the driver is facing. It would be best if the operator is always facing forward. Otherwise, you might move the machine in the wrong direction and get the equipment in a precarious position.

Never overload the excavator when lifting, primarily if operating a mini excavator. Always read the manufacturer’s manual for lifting specifications.

Crane Lift Service for Camper at the Ritz

Crane Lift Service for Camper at the Ritz

In this incident on July 21, 2021, team Pro-Tow received an emergency dispatch from Washington State Patrol for an overturned camper trailer and full-size Dodge pick-up. The RV accident was near Ritzville, WA.

The collision was blocking the interstate, so we contacted a WSP Trooper at the scene to receive more information. We arrived on-site with a Heavy-Duty Rotating Crane Style Wrecker, Medium Duty Wrecker, and a Specialty Landoll Flatbed Semi-Trailer. After a scene evaluation and discussion with the command post, we got to work on this accident recovery and crane lift service.

Challenging Trailer Recovery

We found that the truck and camper trailer had overturned, slid, and then spun to face oncoming traffic. The damage was significant and required special safety precautions to avoid dismantling the camper. While dismantling was possible, that would take more time, equipment, and personnel for this accident recovery.

So instead, we performed calculations and created an alternate but still safe recovery plan. We also set up the equipment to minimize lane closure, so the traffic could still flow safely. Then, using specialty recovery straps, rigging, and high-pressure airbags, Team Pro-Tow performed an overhead crane lift service and load. Next, we performed non-routine strapping and tie-downs for safe transport to the storage yard and finish the trailer recovery.

Accident Recovery Complete

We performed an overhead crane lift service at the storage yard and placed the casualty into storage. The owner was able to retrieve any personal belongings from the unit as needed. We then returned all supplies and equipment to their original location and condition. Once we finished all the required paperwork, our team cleared the call.

Team Pro-Tow offers crane lift services and 24-hour emergency towing in Spokane, Maple Valley, Auburn, and North Bend.

Semi-truck Recovery

A recovery like this one required a two-part process to retrieve both the semi-truck and the trailer. First, our Pro-Tow team flipped the semi-truck back onto its wheels so that we could safely detach the trailer and prepare to tow it. Once the semi-truck was upright again, we detached the trailer and towed the truck away. Then, we used our crane lift equipment to lift the trailer onto the flatbed trailer and transport it back to the yard.
