House Crasher – Heavy Duty Towing Required

House Crasher – Heavy Duty Towing Required

On October 21, 2018, Pro-Tow responded to a dispatch call to help assist a car that had gone down an embankment and crashed into the side of a house. This accident needed heavy-duty towing. We arrived at the scene and reported to the command post, then did a scene inspection and formed our recovery plan.

First, we rigged a transport line to safely transport the rigging down approximately 75 feet at 100% grade. Once lowered, we secured the rigging to the car and used emergency communication devices as we slowly lifted the vehicle. Once the vehicle was safely removed from the house, we lowered it back to the ground to rest on its tires. Pro-Tow then safely winched the car up the embankment and lifted it onto the carrier to be transported to yard 2.

24-Hour Emergency Services For Big And Small Problems

While many of our recovery blogs handle semi-truck accidents or camper accidents, our 24-hour emergency towing is also there for regular vehicles as well. Our 24-hour services include helping fix breakdowns along the roads, accidents, cargo incidents and unexpected leaks or fuel spills. Or, as in this case, a crash into the side of a house. Safety is our priority at Pro-Tow, so if you find yourself in trouble, we have the services and tools to help.

We also have equipment ready for any situation, either big and complicated situations or situations that require big equipment. Pro-Tow also offers heavy lifting with our cranes, which are key in dealing with complex incidents such as with semi-truck accidents. As described in this recovery blog, we used heavy-duty towing and rigging to safely handle the incident.

Repairs To Get You Back On The Road

For emergency towing services, Pro-Tow also provides onsite service and roadside repair, should your vehicle need it. In situations that include large vehicles or heavy trucks though, especially those carrying a load, we understand the importance of safely reaching their destination.

That’s why, if after a safe rescue your vehicle needs repairs, Pro-Tow can take the vehicle to our Motorplex shops. They are located in either Auburn, WA or Spokane, WA. There the heavy-duty mechanic can do all the repairs you need to get back on the road. For fleet vehicles, our Motorplex technicians can also provide light auto work, to make sure your vehicles are in safe and working order.

Just remember, if you find yourself in an unexpected situation or emergency, stay calm and call Pro-Tow to help!

Camping On Peasley – Camper Trailer Accident Recovery

Camping On Peasley – Camper Trailer Accident Recovery

On September 26, 2019 Pro-Tow received an emergency dispatch from the Washington State Police. An overturned camper trailer was broken apart and blocking all lanes on EB SR18 near Federal Way, WA. They required heavy-duty towing and accident recovery immediately.

Major Incident Tow Response Activation

We weren’t the first towing service on the scene. Prior to getting the call, another towing company tried to recover the trailer but were unsuccessful when the trailer started to break apart. The incident was escalated to require Major Incident Tow Response Activation (MIT) by the Washington State Department of Transportation and the Washington State Police. MIT Tows requirean elevated response with increased personnel and heavy-duty towing equipment to clear the scene quickly and safely. We had to reopen all lanes of traffic as soon as possible.

In response to the MIT, we responded with a heavy-duty crane-style wrecker, heavy-duty recovery wrecker, major incident response support vehicle, flatbed tow truck, flatbed tow truck with a transporting dump trailer, compact track loader and specialty grapple attachments. We were well equipped to get this accident recovery accomplished!

Accident Recovery Step By Step

Step 1: Upon arrival to the scene of the incident, report to Incident Command for debriefing and instructions.

Step 2: Perform a scene evaluation and assemble the equipment to the appropriate areas.

Step 3: Create and execute a safe accident recovery plan that includes rigging calculations. We needed to lift this trailer with the least amount of damage to the trailer and debris left on the road.

Step 4: Get to work! In this case, we usedhigh-capacitylifting air bags to partially lift the trailer so we could install soft recovery straps around it in a basket configuration. A four-point rigging connection allows the trailer to be lifted evenly, minimizing destruction. We were able to lift and load the trailer onto our flatbed truck.

Step 5: Clear the lanes and transport the trailer to our secured storage year for temporary storage. Afterwards, we were able to get the trailer back on its wheels so it could be transported to its final destination.

Another day on the job and another heavy-duty towing and accident recovery job done well!

5Th Wheel Down and Over, Needing Heavy Duty Towing on Snoqualmie Pass

5Th Wheel Down and Over, Needing Heavy Duty Towing on Snoqualmie Pass

On September 23, 2019 there was a heavy rainstorm on Snoqualmie Pass, creating low visibility and dangerous driving conditions. As a result, an unfortunate collision occurred, overturning a 5th wheel camping trailer during a busy weekend this fall. This poor camper needed heavy duty towing and accident recovery as quickly as possible.

Pro-Tow is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and was quick to respond to this call. Using our specialized equipment, an overhead crane lift, we were able to load the 5th wheel carefully onto our truck. While our team was hard at work, we were able to keep lane closure to a minimum.

They may look sturdy, but if not lifted carefully, a camper like this can be easily damaged. From the images below, you’ll see the method we used to get this camper off the road and onto our flat bed truck. Before long, the accident was recovered, the trailer was ready for transport and traffic was moving again. If you get in a jam and need heavy duty towing, you know who to call.

What Causes a 5th Wheel Camper to Flip Over?

A lot of us enjoy RVing and 5th wheel trailers are a popular choice in Washington State. They are generally a stable and reliable rig but do come with some sway and roll over hazards that you should be aware of. Being aware of the risks, and using proper towing procedures, will greatly minimize that chance of needing heaving duty towing on your holiday!

Wind speed, how fast you’re traveling, improper towing of the 5th wheel and bad hitch weight distribution can all contribute to an RV turning over. In this incident, it was a collision. Before you tow a 5th wheel trailer, you should check the following:

  • Your truck’s towing capacity. Never tow a trailer that is heavier than your vehicles capabilities.
  • Get a sway bar. This helpful tool can even out the weight and height of the trailer while towing.
  • Ensure the trailer is level. If the trailer is not close to level, it could cause sway in high winds.
  • Secure the hitch. Double check the hitch before you pull out. If it’s not secure, the 5th wheel could come lose and roll over. This is very dangerous to you and other drivers on the road.
  • Check the weather. If the forecast calls for high winds, consider postponing the trip until the winds subside, especially if your trailer is very large.
  • Easy on the brakes. If you slam on the breaks, you could lose control of your trailer. This is especially true when going down hill or when driving in strong winds. Try lowering gears to slow down instead.
  • Don’t speed. The faster you go, the more likely the 5thwheel will sway. Reduce your speed and drive safe.

Remember, always drive to the conditions and give yourself plenty of time to get to your next destination. If you find yourself in trouble, give Pro-Tow a call. We offer emergency heavy-duty towing services around the clock.

Pro-Tow Dislodges a Box Truck From a Power Pole on Highway 169

Pro-Tow Dislodges a Box Truck From a Power Pole on Highway 169

On August 6, 2019, Pro-Tow responded to a dispatched call regarding a semi-truck accident on busy Highway 169 near Maple Valley, WA. A commercial box truck had gone off the road and lodged into a power pole. We arrived on the scene along with the Washington State Patrol, Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety, and the Washington State Department of Transportation.

After checking in with the other agencies and Incident Command, we got straight to the task of accessing the scene and creating an initial recovery plan. To get this job done, we needed a heavy-duty incident response vehicle with special equipment as well as a medium-duty wrecker.

First, we had to cut off the badly damaged cargo box before any extraction could take place. Then, we had to get clearance from local utilities to ensure continuing with the recovery of this semi-truck accident was safe and not interfering with any of their lines. Finally, we installed a three-point rigging system to lift the vehicle from the power pole and ditch with the crane style wrecker.

Once the truck was out, we hooked it up using extensive safety precautions to transport it to a secure storage yard. Overall, we were able to minimize lane closures and minimize traffic congestion. The debris was all cleared from the accident, and we helped the owner’s agent with cargo and personal items before returning the equipment and closing the call.

When there is a semi-truck accident like this one, safety is our top priority. That includes the safety of the agent, the other agencies and responders on-site, our heavy equipment operators and drivers, and everyone driving near the incident on the highway that day. When you call Pro-Tow for accident recovery, you can be sure that the proper steps are taken to create and execute a safe and effective recovery plan.

Double Camper Turnover Holds Up Traffic

Double Camper Turnover Holds Up Traffic

It’s rare for a camper to flip over. In this case, two campers that were being transported flipped over on July 18, 2019. Pro-Tow’s heavy-duty towing service was called to Highway 18 near Snoqualmie, WA to help turnover not one, but two new campers that had an accident during transport. They were blocking traffic at the busy intersection at Interstate 90 and Highway 18.

These campers were new, and so, this heavy-duty towing and accident recovery had to be done carefully to prevent further damage. The campers had to be removed quickly as traffic was beginning to jam up. We used a heavy-duty crane style wrecker to perform the overhead lifting. As always, the team worked with safety top-of-mind and was able to get the campers removed from the scene quickly, opening traffic again.

Can Campers and RVs Turn Over Easily?

So, these campers weren’t attached to a truck when they turned over, but if you carry or tow a camper you should still be aware of the slight turnover risk. A lot of factors come into play for your RV to flip. The size of the RV, it’s weight, the direction of any wind and how fast or tight you are taking corners. Even the wind caused by a semi-truck speeding passed can cause a camper to become unstable.

If your camper is going to tip, you might hear a groaning or creaking sound coming from it. You might feel the pull as it starts to go. Therefore, it’s essential to have all passengers in the vehicle with seatbelts fastened, not the camper, when the vehicle is in motion.

What Do You Do if Your Camper Flips?

The first thing you and other passengers should do, if you’re not injured, is to exit the vehicle and get to a safe place on the side of the road. Once you’ve done that, you should contact the police and inform them of the accident, especially if it is holding up traffic. They might come and start to direct traffic while the accident is being recovered.

Then you need to call to have the camper towed away. That’s where Pro-Tow comes in. Regardless of the size of your unit, we have the heavy-duty towing equipment to get it upright, on a flatbed if necessary and towed away. Depending on the damage, you can decide to have the camper fixed or to write it off.
