On August 6, 2019, Team Pro-Tow responded to an accident recovery call for a box truck that had hit a power pole on Highway 169 near Maple Valley, WA. Unfortunately, the truck was completely lodged into the power pole.

Powerline safety is critical when dealing with an accident with or near power equipment. In this case, we contacted the local utilities. They ensured the power pole was safe and that our accident recovery would not interfere with the line.

Once we got the go-ahead, we cut off the damaged cargo box and rigged up the truck. Then, we could lift the truck from the power pole and ditch using a three-point rigging system and our heavy-duty crane-style wrecker.

Powerline Safety: What to Do If you Hit Power Equipment in Maple Valley?

Thankfully, this accident didn’t cause significant damage to the power pole or lines, so we safely extracted the vehicle from the scene. However, that is not always the case.
If you come across a vehicle accident that has struck power equipment or you see downed power lines, do the following:

  • Call 911 or the utility serving the location. In Maple Valley, that is Puget Sound Energy. Utility professionals and emergency personnel will handle the situation if it is deemed unsafe.
  • If you’re in the vehicle that has contacted the power equipment or have lines on your vehicle, stay in the vehicle. Do not exit until you know for sure the lines are de-energized.
    • If you MUST exit the vehicle, jump away from the vehicle, do not touch it, and land with both feet together. Touching the vehicle while stepping onto the ground can cause electrocution.
  • If you’re not in a vehicle, keep your distance. Stay at least 35 feet away and call for help.
  • If you’re driving by an accident, do not drive over or under downed power lines.
  • If you’re trying to move away from the accident on foot, shuffle away with your feet together, taking small shuffling steps until you are 35 feet away. Large steps can create a path for electricity to run through you.

Pro-Tow Dislodges a Box Truck From a Power Pole on Highway 169

On August 6, 2019, Pro-Tow responded to a dispatched call regarding a semi-truck accident on busy Highway 169 near Maple Valley, WA. A commercial box truck had gone off the road and lodged into a power pole. We arrived on the scene along with the Washington State Patrol, Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety, and the Washington State Department of Transportation.

After checking in with the other agencies and Incident Command, we got straight to the task of accessing the scene and creating an initial recovery plan. To get this job done, we needed a heavy-duty incident response vehicle with special equipment as well as a medium-duty wrecker.

First, we had to cut off the badly damaged cargo box before any extraction could take place. Then, we had to get clearance from local utilities to ensure continuing with the recovery of this semi-truck accident was safe and not interfering with any of their lines. Finally, we installed a three-point rigging system to lift the vehicle from the power pole and ditch with the crane style wrecker.

Once the truck was out, we hooked it up using extensive safety precautions to transport it to a secure storage yard. Overall, we were able to minimize lane closures and minimize traffic congestion. The debris was all cleared from the accident, and we helped the owner’s agent with cargo and personal items before returning the equipment and closing the call.

When there is a semi-truck accident like this one, safety is our top priority. That includes the safety of the agent, the other agencies and responders on-site, our heavy equipment operators and drivers, and everyone driving near the incident on the highway that day. Washington State Patrol calls on #teamprotow to recover an overturned 26 foot International box truck recovery loaded with packages destined to the Philippines for a critical overnight shipment.  After hitting a 6 point bull elk, the driver lost control near Preston, WA.in freezing and snowy temperatures.  Unfortunately, the elk died, however, the driver and passenger were okay.  The elk was salvaged and utilized under the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife salvage program that came into law on July 1, 2016.   Complicating the box truck recovery was the weight of the packages and the damage caused to the roof of the International Box truck necessitating an emergency cargo unload in difficult conditions.  Using a compact track loader from Bobcat Pacific Northwest in Auburn, WA, #teamprotow was able to reload all cargo packages and get them back headed for the Philippines.
