Fishing in the Ditch: Emergency Vehicle Recovery in Maple Valley

Written by the Pro-Tow Team
Vehicle recovery experts serving Maple Valley, Auburn, Spokane and all of Washington Spokane

When the King County Sheriff’s Office calls for assistance, our team at Pro-Tow is ready to respond, day or night, rain or shine. Recently, we were dispatched to 276th Ave SE in Maple Valley to recover a vehicle that had gone over a guardrail and about 50 yards down a very steep embankment.

This wasn’t a simple tow. The scene was dark, and visibility was limited. Our operator reported that the recovery had to be done “through a rough landscape of brush, trees, and sticker bushes. This was all also being performed in the dark, so there were limited visuals to complete this recovery.”

Despite the challenges, our crew moved quickly to make sure the accident recovery was handled safely and efficiently.

Responding with the Right Equipment and Team

The vehicle, a Chevy Avalanche, was deep in that embankment and needed to be lifted out with a crane. That’s why the Sheriff’s Office requested our rotator recovery truck, and we also dispatched an additional truck and operator to assist with the emergency vehicle recovery and transport. Once we arrived, our team assessed the situation and developed a careful accident recovery plan.

Because the vehicle had landed so far down the slope, one of our teammates had to descend the embankment to attach straps and chains. Communication was key in this emergency vehicle recovery. Using wireless headsets, our operators coordinated every movement. This allowed us to maintain constant communication between the top of the slope and the teammate below.

Safety First: Power Lines and Road Closures

The roadway was temporarily closed so our operators could safely position the rotator and support equipment. “There was limited clearance to perform the recovery due to overhead powerlines.” This made precision absolutely critical.

To avoid any damage, the Team Pro-Tow worked slowly, lifting the vehicle in stages. The rotator first brought the vehicle partway up the embankment, then repositioned for the final lift. Bit by bit, they raised the vehicle until it cleared the guardrail without disturbing the nearby power lines.

Completing the Emergency Vehicle Recovery

Once the vehicle was back on level ground, we re-rigged the setup to lift it high enough to clear the guardrail completely. From there, the truck was loaded onto the flatbed for transport back to our secure storage yard.

After the vehicle was delivered and secured, our team cleaned up the site, restored equipment to its original working order, and reopened the roadway. Every Pro-Tow accident recovery ends with the same standard of professionalism. We work hard to be safe, thorough, and respectful of the people and property involved.
