A fifth wheel plate is the heavy-duty, horseshoe-shaped coupling device mounted on the frame of a Freightliner tractor, just behind the cab.  It connects the semi-truck to the trailer by locking onto the trailer’s kingpin and evenly distributing the cargo weight across the truck’s drive axles.
